~About the Book~

Title: Inherited {Curses of VIII #1}
Author: Freedom Matthews
Published: July 12th, 2016
Publisher: Oftomes Publishing
Description: If saying 'I love you' meant death, would you still say it?

The Wilted Rose, of faery-tale and folklore, is a pirate ship filled with unfortunate souls-each forbidden to love. One such soul is Valencia 'Lennie' Roux. Raised in a brothel and an heir to a curse; Lennie never expected to pique the interest of any man. Yet with the arrival of vivid-eyed Nathaniel, she is torn between wanting to know him better and fearing what that knowledge would mean.

With Nathaniel bringing the crew's total to six, the Wilted Rose sets off in search of the remaining two heirs. They hope that in reuniting, they will convince the faery Sorceress responsible for the curse, to end it. However lurking beneath the water is a long standing enemy of the Wilted Rose; who is determined to thwart their quest and bring down its leaders.

Together the eight heirs fight for survival, friendship and love.

Excerpt #1
According to folklore, Rosa had been the first captain of the

Wilted Rose. After succumbing to pain and loss, the Sorceress (the creature responsible for our curse), bewitched Rosa turning her into the figurehead of our fabled ship. After the original cursed eight had died, she was banished to a cove in the middle of the ocean for her failure. The wooden woman was our higher power, and the only link we had to the Sorceress. Visiting her was almost like coming home, she was a warm and mothering creature, who we all looked to for advice.

Excerpt  #2
That surely wasn’t me, looking back from the glass. I couldn’t stop staring. Although Id spent many nights in front of the mirror, before Id been cursed there was no resemblance between the women in the reflection I saw now, to the one Id once known. My skin was flushed by nature, rather than powder or rouge and my mismatched eyes were bright with nerves and excitement. I caught Bess smiling behind me and returned it with shyness. Looking away from the reflection, I smoothed imaginary creases in the beautiful dress that draped my figure.

The fit was too good, like it had been tailored just for me. The cut made me sit straighter with my head held higher. I felt regal and refined –nothing like the girl in britches and braces.

“That dress was kept for Miss Kitty, but you wear it so much better than she ever would. I couldn’t have dreamed a more beautiful partner for my dear Nate.” Bess sighed, laying a hand on my shoulder. I could think of nothing to say in response so I remained silent as I patted the older woman’s arm in gratitude. Who was Miss Kitty though?

After the housekeeper had departed, I continued to stare into the mirror, rearranging my hair to cover the mark on my forehead. Bess hadn’t mentioned it, but I’d seen her hesitate when shed combed my fringe. I brushed the hair aside, hiding the blot on my face.

Though I somewhat looked the part, inside I was the same girl with a low rank and murky past. Turning away from my image, I stood. My heart thudded wildly and I placed my hand to my chest, feeling the erratic pulse against my palm. Inhaling slowly, I released the breath; the soft wisp of air seemed to echo around the sophisticated room.

Aren't those absolutely brilliant?? I hope you all get the chance to check out this whimsical read!
